Earlier today Apple released an update for iWork ’09 that squashes a number of bugs in the applications included (Keynote, Pages & Numbers) but one important added feature is the ability for Pages to export to the ePub format that Apple uses in their iBooks store and application.

This allows anyone to publish an ePub document that can be read in the iBooks app on an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. Check out the support document for details on how to export it properly.

Have you ever been experimenting with iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) and your free trial has run out leaving you unable to make any changes to your documents?

There’s a quick way to get around that restriction, say if you needed to have a fully functional keynote for an extra day of free trial for that important presentation.

Head to your harddrive directory, in my case Macintosh HD, then go to Library, then to Preferences, then look for the file com.apple.iWork09.plist (also works for iWork0X.plist, depending on which trial version you are running)

Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.iWork09.plist

Then simply delete the file. Open up any of your iWork apps and with you can start a new 30 day trial.

I do not condone doing this endlessly; however, it’s very useful in those instances when you need some extra time.

Update: Speech is over. New versions of iLife and iWork (sites not updated currently), updated 17″ MacBook Pro and the news that the iTunes music store is going completely DRM free by the end of this quarter, as well as variable pricing on songs (no more $0.99 only, now the song price will range from $0.69 to $1.29 a song).

Apple’s got a big keynote speech today in San Francisco where they’ll be announcing new software/hardware to the world. Follow along at some of our favorite sites:

Macrumorslive.com (currently hacked and annoying)

Engadget.com — Great photos and coverage

Gdgt.com — Similar to Engadget (former Editor of Engadget, Ryan Block, runs gdgt.com)

Ustream with Chris Pirillo — if you want to listen to the keynote and watch a nerd’s reaction, this is the stream for you.

So far, a new version of the iLife suite, iLife ’09, has been announced. Expect a new version of iWork to follow, along with possible updates to iMacs, Mac minis and maybe AppleTV? What else are you hoping/expecting to be updated?

Jared asks:

I have been using Pages for a lot of my desktop publishing needs while on my Mac, however, I still need people in the PC world to view my documents. I have been using the Export function quite a lot and noticed that it does not have a shortcut key next to it. What is its shortcut key?

This is a great question and actually a problem that I have encountered when using other programs. As I love to use shortcuts I find it rather annoying when the one command I use the most doesn’t have a shortcut. The solution: Create one yourself.

Step 1: Go to your System Preference and click on Keyboard and Mouse Pane.

Step 2: Select the Keyboard Shortcuts Tab as shown above. Then click the + to add a new shortcut.

Step 3: In the dialog box that pops up above just select the application you want to create the shortcut for, in this case, Pages. Don’t worry if it isn’t listed, just click other and select the application via the Finder popup window.

Step 4: Enter a menu title. This is the only really important part that you can screw up on. You must enter the command exactly as it shows up in the application so in this situation the command in Pages is “Export…” Note: if you are creating the ellipsis for this command you can type it by pressing Option+;

Step 5: Enter your keyboard shortcut. For this example I went with Cmd+E

Step 6: Restart the application you created the shortcut for and just like that you have a new shortcut. It will even show up in the menu for those times when you forget the newly created shortcut.

Now you can all go ahead and create new shortcuts for any application you want.
