@caro: Backup hard drives can be found at just about any electronics store (i.e. Future Shop, Staples, London Drugs, etc). Just make sure Macs are supported by the brand of hard drive you're looking at.

The memory part you'll have to be a bit more careful about to make sure they actually support installing in Macs. Neural Net in Market Mall will definitely do it as they only service/sell Macs.

Can you tell me where one would go to buy memory or back up hard drives for a mac in Saskatoon other than the campus store?

That's one thing I didn't touch on is hard drive space. If your hard drive is full (or quite full) then your machine can get sluggish as the OS (operating system) has less space to work with. Clearing out old videos/photos you don't need, music you don't listen to, etc or moving them to an external hard drive are options to clear up some space.

Depending on how long you've used your computer, a fresh install or a good system management utility that allows you to delete unused files such as localizations could be helpful. Drive Genius 2 has some nice features (some of which might be part of the free trail). MacPilot is also a very comprehensive app for tweaking your settings. I have a 1.5 (originally a 1.33) Ghz powerbook and I find it still works great, Just have to worry about getting the hard drive too full reducing the virtual memory.
